Vatan haqida insho, literally meaning "homeland territory" in Kurdish, is a term used to describe the concept of self-determination. It has been adopted by many other ethnic groups, including Armenians and Assyrians. For example, the Armenian nationalist activist Dashnaktsutiun party was founded on this principle in 1890 specifically to promote self-determination for the Armenians. At times this ideology can be problematic because it can lead to demands for autonomy over an entire nation if one part of that nation is already considered autonomous. This can lead to an undefined status for minorities residing within the country, as happened in the cases of Iraq, Syria, and several former republics of the Soviet Union. It is also not clear whether this concept is applicable to ethnic groups that are already considered autonomous under another state. The KurdsBibliography Articles http://www.kurdishinstitute.org/history_tr_map.htm "The Kurdish Institute", accessed March 16, 2005 http://216.33.240. 34/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050319/OPINION01/503190363 "Definitive Insights", accessed March 16, 2005 http://www.encyclopedia.com "ENCYCLOPEDIA: Self-determination: definition and history11 May 2007."
